How to Boil Your Toys

As one problematic priest once said, “Cleanliness is next to godliness.” While we’re not entirely sure if we agree, we do believe that our toys can make you see god — and keep those clean, you must!

There are a few ways to keep your toys clean and safe for enjoyment, including:

  • Handwashing and air-drying
  • Throwing them in the dishwasher (but check the manufacturer's instructions first)
  • And finally, what we’ll be covering today: boiling!

Boiling your toys may seem…strange, but we promise it’s a tried-and-true method of sanitizing them. But first, let’s discuss what we can and can’t boil.

Which toys can I boil?

Toys made of 100% body-safe silicone are safe to boil! This includes plugs, dildos, and anything else entirely comprised of silicone. While motorized toys often have a silicone exterior, they are not safe to be boiled due to the technology they house that makes vibrators, well… vibrate! Boiling a motorized toy will damage it and potentially harm you. If it has a power button, handwashing is the way to go.

Can I boil 100% borosilicate glass toys?

Yes! Borosilicate glass is made from silica sands and boron trioxide, which makes it resistant to thermal shock, unlike regular glass, which can crack and shatter when undergoing rapid temperature change. This is the same glass that glass cookware and chemistry equipment are made out of. If you’re boiling your glass toys, triple-check that they are 100% borosilicate glass!

Do I have to boil my toys in a separate pot? Can I use the pots I cook with?

It’s all dependent on preference, but ultimately, you can boil your toys in the same pots you cook with. If that weirds you out too much, it’s totally fine to have a designated toy pot. Otherwise, just be sure to thoroughly wash your pots between uses, as you would any other cookware.

How do I boil actually boil my toys?

  • Fill a saucepan or pot with enough water so that your toy(s) remain fully submerged and can sustain enough water while they are boiling—it’s better to have more than less.
  • Turn your stove on to medium-high heat.
  • Wait until the water reaches a rolling boil, or when the water is creating many, large bubbles.
  • Gently drop your toy(s) into the water.
  • Boil between 5-10 minutes.
  • Wait until the water has cooled down to remove with tongs or your hands.
  • Lay on a clean towel to air dry.

Boiling your toys isn’t anything to be scared of as long as you’re double checking your toys materials and, most importantly, being safe. But if you don’t want any extra dishes to wash, all Unbound toys can be adequately cleaned using an antibacterial soap and warm water, too. ;)
